The brake dust shield helps to protect the brake disc from water, dirt and other road debris. When driving on wet and dirty roads without a brake shield, grime will build up on surface of the brake disc. This impairs braking efficiency as the brake pads must clear this grime out of the way before they can fully engage. This also increases the wear and tear on the pad and disc. As an added benefit the brake shield also protects the brake caliper, bearings and wheel hubs from water, dirt, stones and other road dirt.
