The task of the mass air flow sensor in the Volvo is, as its name suggests, to calculate the amount of air the engine draws in. Inside the mass air flow sensor, there are thin metal wires that are electronically heated and cooled to varying degrees depending on the amount of air passing through the intake. Your Volvo measures how much current is required to keep the wires warm. In this way, the car's control system can calculate how much air is passing and adjust the fuel amount accordingly.
