A broken wheel hub often calls attention to itself through a grinding noise when you drive straight, or that decreases or changes as you turn. If your Volvo does this, it is almost certain that a wheel hub is broken. Another way to find out if the wheel bearing needs replacing is to raise the car on a lift and see if there is a gap. Grab hold at the top and bottom of the wheel to see if the wheel can turn vertically sideways.
Volvo S40, V50, C70 och C30 has rear wheel hubs of the unit bearing type, Hub Unit. This means that the wheel bearing comes in a complete set with seals. Hub Unit wheel hubs are greased from the factory and are very easy to change yourself as neither the pressing tool nor a spread of wheel hub grease is needed.
