Properly servicing the crankcase ventilation usually means that all components must be replaced, which can be quite expensive due to labour costs and because the connector cables must be removed. It is generally recommended that the components for the crankcase ventilation be replaced at least every 160,000 km or so, depending on the quality of oils and the service intervals followed, as well as the driving conditions the car has been subjected to. All plastic parts become very brittle over the years, and the hoses can become clogged with old oil residues and dirt. Clogged hoses result in higher pressure, which over time can cause oil leaks. If nothing is done about the problem, it is only a matter of time before the crankcase ventilation breaks down, which in extreme cases can lead to engine failure.
