Een kapot wiellager uit zich meestal in een geluid als je rechtdoor rijdt, een geluid dat afneemt of van karakter verandert als je een bocht maakt. Als je dit symptoom bij de Volvo heeft, kun je er vrijwel zeker van zijn dat het een kapot wiellager is. Een andere manier om erachter te komen of het wiellager vervangen moet worden, is door de auto op te krikken en te kijken of er speling is. Pak het wiel aan de boven- en onderkant vast om te zien of het wiel verticaal zijwaarts kan worden bewogen.

De Volvo XC90 heeft voorwiellagers van het Hub Unit-type. Dit betekent dat het wiellager compleet geleverd wordt met afdichtingen. De wiellagers van de naafeenheid zijn in de fabriek gesmeerd en zijn zeer eenvoudig zelf te vervangen, aangezien er geen persgereedschap of extra wiellagervet nodig is.
