Een kapot wiellager uit zich meestal in een geluid als je rechtdoor rijdt, een geluid dat afneemt of van karakter verandert als je een bocht maakt. Een andere manier om erachter te komen of het wiellager vervangen moet worden, is door de auto op te krikken en te kijken of er speling is. Pak het wiel aan de boven- en onderkant vast om te zien of het wiel verticaal zijwaarts kan worden bewogen
