Een defect wiellager herken je meestal aan een vreemd geluid wanneer je rechtuit rijdt, een geluid dat minder wordt of van karakter verandert als je een bocht maakt. Als je dit symptoom bij je Volvo hebt, kun je er bijna zeker van zijn dat het om een kapot wiellager gaat. Een andere manier om te controleren of het wiellager vervangen moet worden, is door de auto op te krikken en te kijken of er speling is. Pak het wiel bovenaan en onderaan vast en kijk of het wiel verticaal zijwaarts kan bewegen.

De Volvo S80 en V70 2WD hebben achterwiellagers van het type eenheidslager, Hub Unit. Dit betekent dat het wiellager als een compleet onderdeel met pakking wordt geleverd. Hub unit wiellagers zijn af fabriek ingevet en zijn heel eenvoudig zelf te vervangen, omdat je geen persgereedschap of extra wiellagervet nodig hebt.
