Een defect wiellager herken je meestal aan een vreemd geluid wanneer je rechtuit rijdt, een geluid dat minder wordt of van karakter verandert als je een bocht maakt. Een andere manier om te controleren of het wiellager vervangen moet worden, is door de auto op te krikken en te kijken of er speling is. Pak het wiel bovenaan en onderaan vast en kijk of het wiel verticaal heen en weer kan bewegen.
De Volvo S60, S80, V70 en XC70 AWD hebben achter wiellagers van het type eenheidslager, Hub Unit. Dit betekent dat het wiellager als een compleet onderdeel met pakningen wordt geleverd. Hub unit wiellagers zijn vanuit de fabriek ingevet en zijn heel eenvoudig zelf te vervangen, omdat je geen persgereedschap of extra wiellagervet nodig hebt.
