Man plejer at sige, at komponenterne til krumtaphusventilationen bør udskiftes mindst hver 16000 km eller så afhængigt af hvilken kvalitet af olie og hvilke serviceintervaller man har fulgt samt hvilke køreforhold bilen har været udsat for. Alle plastdetaljer bliver meget skrøbelige over årene, og slanger kan blive tilstoppede af gamle oljerester og snavs. Tilstopede slanger resulterer i et højere tryk, hvilket med tiden kan forårsage oljelækage. Hvis man ikke gør noget ved problemet, er det kun et spørgsmål om tid, før krumtaphusventilationen går i stykker, hvilket i ekstreme tilfælde kan føre til motorhavari.
